LETS WELCOME TEAM BOTSWANA

Team Botswana will be coming to D.C.! Five Batswana high school students will be coming to the United States this July 16-18 to compete in the inaugural International Robot Olympics. These students come from Ramotswa, a village just south of Gaborone. They are joined by their adult mentor, Mrs Gaone Karabo, who works as a Senior Teacher of Computer Studies in Kagiso Senior Secondary School. They have been learning about programming and engineering over the past few months, and building a robot that will compete in the games.

Botswana consistently ranks as one of the strongest-governed countries in Africa, especially in its role in containing corruption, regionally ranking the highest in both the World Bank assessment and Rule of Law Index. After a string of scandals in the early ‘90s, the government created the Directorate of Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC) in 1994, which continues to investigate and prosecute officials accused of corruption. Not only that, but the national revenue from diamond mining has been fairly well distributed throughout the county.

2017 IBRAHIM INDEX - BOTSWANA ONCE MORE IN THE TOP THREE OVERALL

The 2017 Ibrahim Index of African Governance (IIAG), has been released, which shows that Botswana is once more 3rd overall out of 54 African countries, with a score of 72.7 (down from 73.7 last year). The same modestly downward trend was apparent in the ratings of the other top countries, as well as the continent as a whole.

Mauritius once more took the top overall position with a score of 81.4, followed by Seychelles at 73.7.

The IAAG Index consists of four overarching categories with 14 indices based on 100 sub-indices.
